Black Bears
Nilkitkwa Wolves

I originally had gone up to the bridge on the Babine River near Fort Babine to look for grizzly bears, but after waiting around for a couple of hours I decided to venture further and went up to Nilkitwa. As I was driving, I almost drove over top this light coloured wolf pup that was laying in the middle of the road in the warm morning sun! I was driving out loud diesel pickup and figured he'd disappear for sure, but no, he lazily got up, stretched and looked up at me and slowly headed off into the bush. There were 4 other pups further up the road running around. This one sat down in the bush and started howling. The others howled back. I drove up the road towards the other pups and they disappeared in the trees. I parked the truck and waited. Moments later the howling started - they were close by in the trees and the sounds they were making - howling back and forth - it was amazing. Minutes later the first pup arrived, trotting up the road and they all came out and headed back up the road. I turned the truck around and followed. The original pup was not nervous at all, but the others kept disappearing into the trees, and would pop back out once I fell back behind. I followed them up the road for about an hour but them started feeling bad that I was disturbing them, and I wondered where the parents were -hunting? Anyway, I hoped that I would see them again another day but not yet...

Porcupines are Cute!

Ok these guys can cause your dog some harm or eat your cabin, but you have to admit they are pretty funky creatures. I found this one along a the Telkwa High Road one spring morning - he/she was huge but luckily for me, they weren't bothered by my walking right up to him to take a few hundred pictures :) It does pay to go out in the morning before you head off to work.

Nilkitkwa

If I haven't mentioned it before, I love going up to Nilkitkwa - beautiful area, lots to see - grizzly bears, mountain goats, moose... and the landscapes!

These photos were taken in the Fall of 2009 while out moose hunting and/or hucklberry picking all the while looking for grizzly bears. No animals on these couple of outings but it was a great huckleberry year.

Here is my favourite Nilkitkwa photo - 'the 2 old snags' I just love the way the light was hitting them amongst the gone-to-seed fireweed with snowy mountains behind.
